Evaluation:
Informant very cooperative, information seems reliable.

Disposition of Unit:
1st Regt was located at the western sector of the gold mine in SANIN-Myon.

Strength of Unit:
The 5th Co was attached to the 2nd Bn at CHINJU but after arriving at SANIN-Myon fate of 2nd Bn, unknown.

Personal and Unit History:
Informant was a member of the Home Guard at ANNANGRI when NKPA troops occupied the town. Informant was conscripted into the army 27 Jul 50. Departed 27 Jul 50 ANNANGRI marched - arrived CHONAN 28 Jul 50. Departed 30 Jul 50 CHONAN - marched TAEJON - 7 Aug 50 Departed TAEJON - marched - MUJU 10 Aug 50. Departed MUJU 10 Aug 50 marched CHINJU - 15 Aug 50. Departed CHINJU - 15 Aug 50 - marched gold mine at SANIN-Myon - 18 Aug 50.
Informant unit was composed of men who were forced in the NKPA from the occupied areas. They were not issued soldier identification book. Squad leader and platoon leader were N. Korean. PW deserted from his unit on the morning of 21 Aug 50 and surrendered to the US Forces.

Personalities:
No information.

Ammunition and Food Supply:
Informant hauled ammunition from a village located 200 meters from the gold mine. Approximately 30 troops hauled 3,000 rounds of rifle ammunition on their backs from this village to the unit. PW does not known whether more ammunition was hidden there or not. Troops were believed to have about 80 rounds each.
There was very little food on hand. Rice obtained from villages. Usually rice balls were made and one rice ball was distributed to each man. No other food with the rice ball. An emergency supply of rice is always kept. Did not observe or hear of any supplies coming in.

Replacements:
No replacements. All severely wounded personnel were sent to the rear for medical attention. A hospital was located about 2 km W of the gold mine (hearsay).
On recovery, personnel are believed to be kept in the rear and not used for front line duty.

Captured Equipment:
One US Carbine was observed in the unit. No ammunition observed.

Morale:
The morale was low because of many casualties.

Enemy Intentions:
The objective of the unit was to take MASAN.

US PW's:
22 Jul 50, observed group of American PsW at AN NANG-Ri (1620.4-990.3) walking through the town. Estimated about 350. Believed to be sent to P’YONGYANG. PWs were believed to have been captured at TAEJON.

S. Korean Sentiment:
The S. Korean civilians were afraid of the NKPA and did not think they would win the war.
