2. ASSESSMENT:
PW states he had been waiting for an opportunity to surrender for a long time, being aware that the NKPA, although basking in the glory of its past successes, was doomed to defeat by the combined might of UN forces. PW first heard of the UN INCH’ON landing after his capture. Very little military information since PW was assigned to a rear echelon unit. PW seemed alert and in fair health and very eager to talk. No further interrogation recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION
Chronology:
Feb 48: PW assigned to the 2nd Div, Ration Breakdown Section as section leader with the rank of Sr Lt. PW had previous training with this same unit during its period of expansion at which time it was known as a Civ Trng Ctr. 2nd Div Hq and two regts, 5th and 6th Regts, were stationed at NANAM; 4th Regt was stationed at HOERYONG (會寧). Div Arty, up to TO & E strength in Russian Artillery pieces, was stationed in NANAM (羅南). 2nd Div, with personnel strength of 10,000 was entirely equipped with Russian weapons. PW received very little infantry training during his entire military career.
Jun 49: 5th Regt departed by rail to transfer to the 4th Div at P’YONGYANG.
Jul 49: 2nd Div departed NANAM by rail to HAMHUNG. Occupied former Jap Army buildings on the outskirts of HAMHUNG.
Dec49: A Civ Trng Unit stationed at SONGDOK was redesignated the 17th Regt and integrated into the 2nd Div. 17th Regt with strength of approx 2,500, was armed only with Jap rifles, 50-60 per company.
Mar 50: 17th Regt received its full quota of Russian infantry weapons. weapons were part of a recent USSR arms aid shipment which arrived at HUMGNAM, a port city, 10-15 km SE of HAMHUNG.
Jun 50: 2nd Div departed HAMHUNG by rail. Detrained at KUMWHA (金化)
25 Jun 50: PW, now assigned to the 17th Regt, Rear echelon Ration Distribution Section, heard a rapidly spreading rumor among the officers and NCOs OF THE 17th Regt Hq that the ROK forces had launched a full-scale attack on the 38° parallel and that they had already advanced 5-8km into N. KOREA. Immediately after hearing this rumor, artillery fire was heard from the 38° parallel.
o/a 1 Sep 50: 17th Regt crossed the NAKTONG River approx 10km N SINBAN-NI. 4th, 6th Regts and Div Arty also crossed river in the vicinity (hearsay). PW was uncertain of previous operations, however recalls following towns in his advance south: CH’UNGCH’ON (春川), CH’ONGJU (淸州), KUMCH’ON (金泉), and HYOPCH’ON (陜川). Tactical operations of 17th Regt subsequent to river crossing unknown since PW did not cross the NAKTONG River until o/a 17 Sep 50.
21 Sep 50: PW surrendered to the US 38th RCT.

4. GENERAL:
PW firmly believes that if and when a full-scale penetration of the NKPA line is accomplished, the NKPA forces will be completely helpless. PW has neither seen nor heard of prepared defensive lines to the rear of the present front lines. The NKPA still has the manpower to muster formidable defensive forces but against the overwhelming fire superiority of the UN forces, its defense will not hold up for any extended period. The Chinese Communist Army, not fully recovered from its recent battle against the Nationalist Army, is unable to participate in any full scale operation for some time to come.
