3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
A. Chronology:
PW's home was in KYONGSONG. On 16 Sep 49 he entered the NCO School at KYONGSONG and was assigned to the South Korean 17th Regiment. Two months later, he was sent to ONGJIN with his Regiment where he completed school and became an NCO. He remained in ONGJIN until the North Korean attack. He was captured on 25 June 50. He was taken to HAEJU, SARIWON, and then to KYONG SONG with many other South Korean conscriptees. He was inducted into the NK Army on 26 Aug 50 and was told that he belonged to the 3rd Co, 33rd Battalion of the 107th Regiment. There were about 500 other conscriptees.
PW received Communist indoctrination for one week. On 2 Sep 50, the 2nd Co, 33rd Battalion moved to KAEPUNG where artillery gun emplacements, trenches and pill boxes were constructed. He did not see any artillery. Departed KAEPUNG on 19 Sep 50 and arrived on the same day at TONG JIN where they were joined by another unit the 31st Bn of the 107th Regiment.
Reorganization of the 31st and 33rd Regiment of the 107th Regiment took place on 20 and 21 Sep 50 at TONG JIN and equipment was transported here from an unknown location.
PW escaped from his unit while delivering a letter from his Company Commander to the Battalion Commander. He read the letter which requested the Battalion Commander to speed the transport of equipment and troops so that they could make an assault on KIMPO airfield immediately. The letter also stated that the 33rd Battalion 31st Regiment and other units would depart TONGJIN at 1600 hours, 24 Sep 50 and would start the attack at night. After reading the letter, PW realized its importance, went into KIMPO and surrendered himself and gave the letter to the ROK Marine Commander.
33rd and 31st Battalions last observed at TONGJIN.
Estimated strength for the 33rd Battalion: 700 troops.
